Facebook Becomes Relevant to Business with DOCS

May 5, 2010 1:31 pm - Posted by Jeff Phillips in Industry News, Opinion

At the f8 Developer Conference last week, Facebook announced the release of DOCS, an application which allows Facebook users to create, upload and share any Microsoft Office document directly within the Facebook user interface.

With the release of DOCS, anyone who has a Facebook account can add this application to their profile and immediately begin creating and sharing content made with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or any other member of the Office suite.

The ability to use Facebook for editing a Word document is not all that interesting in itself; there are many applications and services (such as Google Docs) that can provide that.  It’s the exposure of the concept to a massive new audience and the resulting behavioral changes that are exciting and promising.

While the Marketing industry is well aware of the benefits of using social media as a communications channel to the outside world,  many mainstream organizations are still unclear about how permitting regular business workers to use applications with Facebook-like capabilities could result in anything but wasted time.

If the promise of DOCS holds true, Facebook will have instantly evolved from being only a personal, entertainment-based social network to a basic business collaboration environment that 400 million people already know how to use.

The “desktop of the future” is not likely to be Facebook itself.  But with the release of DOCS, it is further confirmation that social media applications are an important foundation for the future of information and knowledge exchange in the modern enterprise.
